Generation Of Computer Introduction
Introduction:
Just sixty years have passed since the first electronic computer was successfully completed. During the last seven decades, computer industry has witnessed very rapid technological progress. Phenomenal technological progress is often termed as the origin of Information revolution being witnessed today.
The Technological development often referred to by the term "generation". The transitions from one generation to other is marked by substantial improvement in the technology. The technological improvement that marks the generation is also referred to as "land-mark" improvement over the Existing technology. The modern age of computer started with ENIAC. The development of computer can be divided into various generation based on the technology used in them. Following are the different types of computer generation:
1. First Generation of Computer
2. Second Generation of Computer
3. Third Generation of Computer
4. Fourth Generation of Computer
5. Fifth Generation of Computer
1. First Generation of Computer (1942-1955)
The first Generation of Computer were based on the electronic valves or Vacuum tubes. Vacuum tubes are the devices in which a stream of electronics is controlled by electric magnetic fields.
Vacuum tubes was invented by Lee De Forest in 1908 AD.
Features of First Generation Computers:
1. Using vacuum tubes as a main part.
2. It occupied very large space.
3. Very expensive to operate.
4. Consuming a lot of electricity.
5. Generation a lot of heat.
6. Machine level programming languages was used.
7. Using punched Cards and paper tapes as input devices.
8. Not useful for command purpose, used only for scientific research.
Examples:-
1. ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator andf Calculator.
2. UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer)
3. EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer)
4. EDSAC ( Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Computer)
2. Second Generation of Computer (1956-1963)
The second generation of Computer were based on the transistor.
